"We are but dust and a shadow."
(Roman poet Horace, 65 BC)
Dust and a Shadow creates distinctive music inspired by great works of existential horror by authors like H.P. Lovecraft, Thomas Ligotti, Robert Chambers, E. F. Benson, and others. Tapping into this literary tradition, the band's music evokes an atmosphere of dread and longing, which forms the backdrop for stories of men and gods in a constant struggle to find their identities and places in an uncaring universe.
The music combines traditional instruments including guitar, mountain dulcimer, violin and bass with a variety of modern synthesized sounds that together form uniquely expansive, atmospheric, and story-driven songs.
The band is based in the Chicago area and records and produces its music at Blackwood Studios.
